My images combine my love for geology and photography.
I grew up in San Gabriel, California. My dad worked on spacecraft . I helped him mix chemicals and develop prints in his home-made dark room. It is probably no surprise then that, as I grew up, I developed a passion for space exploration, astronomy, and photography. I built two of my own telescopes and took some nice star-trail images with them (I should have invested in a tracker). My mom could type faster than 120 words per minute, but gave that up to raise my brothers and me. I learned from her that sacrifice and patience were very important if I wanted to do anything worth doing.
I loved being in Boy Scout Troop 169. Going on back-backing trips and working on merit badges exposed me to so many different topics and far-away places. It was probably because of those experiences, plus my Junior High School’s week-long “Science of the Desert Trip,” that I decided to become a geologist. Upon graduation, I got a job at an open-pit copper mine in Globe, Arizona, then with the Arizona Geological Survey and then with the New Mexico Bureau of Geology, and then with a great company called HydroSystems. I worked in remote, difficult-to-get-to areas where few people travel, creating geologic maps and reports. For me, creating a map is so much fun because I get to be part explorer, scientist, artist, writer, and communicator. Photography is very similar. I get to use my knowledge of an area to present an image that conveys its essence and its beauty. Geology, like photography, is often a solitary activity, so it feels good to be able to share with others. That’s why I created this website. I’m very excited to finally be able to share some of my images with you. Most of the images on these pages were captured while I was working to create maps. I hope you enjoy them.
In the meantime, I also became a pilot, and taught environmental geology classes at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.
Some of my other fun hobbies include kayaking, reading, flying drones, sustainability, public speaking, going to movies, educating others, and doing fun things with my wife and daughter. Since 1994 I’ve been living in Gilbert, Arizona.
